“INDO-GERMAN CONFERENCE ON “WATER MANAGEMENT IN INDIA”

ON 29 MAY 2017

AISSMS organized a one day Indo-German Conference on Water Management in India on May 29, 2017. The main objective of the conference was to give wide publicity to water management course run by AISSMS jointly with VESBE Germany. This conference discussed the issues related with water management in India. At present, India is facing major challenges in terms of availability of pure water, its  equitable  distribution  to  the  masses, scientific  management  of  wastewater  and its  reuse  possibilities  to  reduce  the increasing demand for potable water. About 80% of water is used for the ‘non-drinking’ purpose, which is resulting in wastewater generation. Little quantity of waste water is recycled and reused. However, recycle and reuse  has  not  received  much  attention because  of  the  lack  of  viable  models, technology  support  and  lack  of  sufficient trained  and  skilled  manpower. In view of these, the conference on water management in India was organized by AISSMS’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Department of Civil Engineering and ITI, Boribhadak Pune at Sheraton Grand, Pune.

On the Dias:  Chief guest Dr. Devanand Shinde, Vice-Chancellor, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Shri Malojiraje Chhatrapati Hon. Secretary All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society, Mr. Frank Hoffmann, Regional Director, IGCC, Pune, Dr. Anant Sardeshmukh, Director General, MCCIA, Pune, Mr. Zaheer Ahmed, University of Stuttgart, Germany, Shri Suresh Shinde Honorary Joint Secretary All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society, Dr D S Bormane (Principal of AISSMS COE) and Mr Walunj (Vice-Principal, ITI, Boribhadak, Pune) were present for the innuagral function of one day Indo-German Conference on Water Management in India on May 29, 2017.

Secretary Shri Malojiraje Chhatrapati welcomed the chief guest and other guests, all the participants of one day Indo-German Conference and gave an overview of the conference. Dr D S Bormane briefed about the MoU between AISSMS and VESBE, and gave an overview of water management course run by AISSMS. Mr. Frank Hoffmann, IGCC, Pune shared some possible kinds of joint venture between the India and Germany. He also said that German Government has taken an initiative to be more focused on such operator based skilling programs.  Dr. Anant Sardeshmukh, Director General, MCCIA, Pune added in his views that today industries requirement is the skill based programs which provide  a platform to show your creativity. Mr. Zaheer Ahmed, University of Stuttgart, Germany gave the overview of VESBE and other partners of the BIBS project. Chief Guest Dr. Devanand Shinde VC Shivaji University, Kolhapur enlightened about the importance of water management. He also congratulated AISSMS for organizing such a conference for the first time where industry and academics come on the same platform to discuss social issue of water management. He also gave various kinds of examples on water management in India. After this the vote of thanks was given by Dr. M S Deshpande.

Demonstration of Environment Discovery System (EDS) donated by VESBE to AISSMS for trainings on Water Management.

The total participants for the conference were 72 from the various industries of Pune like Deccan Water treatment, Pune, Thermax, HydroPure, Soiltech Pvt Ltd, FESTO,  Priora Water Solutions Pvt Ltd, Chemsys, Sahyadri Engg, Dyna Biotech, Annanya Interface and Control Pvt Ltd, Aqua Blue.

Eminent speakers for the conference

The Keynote address was delivered by Mr. Kiran Deshpande, ex-GM, Thermax, Pune. He gave an overview of the recent advances in water management in India. He also focused on availability, growing population of India, projected demand and supply deficit of water India. He emphasized on simple techniques like rain water harvesting, water recycle and reuse to solve the problems of water to some extent. Dr V. A. Mhaisalkar, Professor, VNIT, Nagpur discussed the Sustainable Technologies in Water Purification. Research should be focused on technology based on utilization of abundant solar energy for the concentration of wastewater and extraction of valuable products. Mr Zaheer Ahmed Shariff, University of Stuttgart, Germany shared his views on “Practice Oriented Trainings in Urban Water Management in India”. He also talked about technologies developed by Germany in waste management. Didactic methodology will be useful for development of manpower. He also talked about the 3D simulation techniques as an effective tool to train manpower and how it will be useful in understanding the actual working of the plant. Mr. R. G. Tambe and M A Ladkat, Deputy City Engineer, PCMC talked about the water treatment and their distribution, water supply strategies using the SCADA system. Dr. Parag Gogate, Associate Professor, ICT, Mumbai discussed the advanced techniques based waste water treatment. He shared some advanced waste treatment based reactors such as hydrodynamic cavitation, activated sludge process, and advanced oxidation process utilization. This conference provided an interactive platform for academicians, researchers, policy makers and industry personnel to provide viable and sustainable solution to society.
