National Seminar on ‘Intensification of Chemical Processing using Novel Reactors’
Jan 9, 10 & 22, 2015

Department of Chemical Engineering organized National Seminar on ‘Intensification of Chemical Processing using Novel Reactors’ on Jan 9-10 & 22, 2015. Intensification is an innovative concept  applied to  improve  the  productivity  of  chemical process  plants  using  a  sustainable approach. It can be considered as any chemical engineering development that leads to a substantially smaller, cleaner, more energy efficient technology.  To optimize energy consumption at the same time giving environmental and safety benefits by radical reduction in the physical size of the plant or changes in the processes. Intensification  can  be  achieved using  multi functional  equipment, increasing  the  rates  of  reaction  by  using novel  reactors  or  completely  newer  energy sources. The aim of this Seminar was to discuss the various techniques, advancements in reactors and effective approach for process intensification of different physical and chemical processing applications. In Association with VESBE, Germany 2nd Indo-German Colloquium on ‘Water Management in India’
January 28-29, 2015

All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society (AISSMS), Pune in association with VESBE (Association for European Social Work, Education and Training), Germany organized 2nd Indo-German Colloquium on ‘Water Management in India’ on January 28-29, 2015. This two days colloquium discussed the issues related with water management in India. At present we are facing major challenges like availability of safe potable water, its  equitable  distribution  to  the  masses, scientific  management  of  wastewater  and its  reuse  possibilities  to  reduce  the increasing demand for potable water. About 80% of water is used for the ‘non-drinking’ purpose, which is resulting in wastewater generation. Little quantity of waste water is recycled and reused. However, recycle and reuse  has  not  received  much  attention because  of  the  lack  of  viable  models, technology  support  and  lack  of  sufficient trained  and  skilled  manpower.

During the welcome address of Shri Malojiraje Chhhatrapati, Honorary Secretary AISSMS emphasized on the growing issues of water and associated management. The colloquium was inaugurated at the auspicious hands of Dr R R Sonde, Executive Vice President of Thermax Ltd.  Dr Sonde talked about the growing issues of water and energy in India and the Globe. These issues need robust solutions. The Keynote address was derived by Shri Dayandand Panse, Secretary, Indian Water Works Association. He gave an overview of the water availability, growing population of India, projected demand and supply deficit of water India. He emphasized on simple techniques like rain water harvesting, water recycle and reuse to solve the problems of  water to some extent. Dr Khante, Director, Shubhjyot Consultants Pvt Ltd discussed the innovative techniques for waste water treatment in industry. Research should be focused on technology based on utilization of abundant solar energy for the concentration of wastewater and extraction of valuable products. Shri Lalit Bajare, Nixie Engineers Pvt Ltd talked about the containerized reserve osmosis systems which are useful for reducing the space and processing time requirement for treatment of wastewater. Shri Shirpad Khatav, Managing Director, S S Techno Ltd discussed the techniques based on multiple effect evaporators for concentration of wastewater and recovery of value added products from the waste. This technique is useful for development of viable models for zero liquid discharge.

The special session was organized on the development of skilled manpower and professionals for water management. Dr Danao, Principal, AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune talked about availability of only 3% of fresh water in the world, and the need to use it optimally. Most of the wastewater projects are not running full capacity and maintenance issues due to the non-availability of skilled manpower. Ms Meinecke, International Project Manage, VESBE, Germany discussed the innovative program to develop skilled personnel. Mr Zaheer Ahmed Shariff, University of Stuttgart, Germany talked about technologies developed by Germany in waste management. Dyadic teaching methodology will be useful for development of manpower. Mr Thomas Burger, IAT, Stuttgart, Germany talked about the 3D simulation techniques as an effective tool to train manpower and how it will be useful in understanding the actual working of the plant. Poster and model making competition was organized for KG to PG students. Highly energetic students presented their talent and came up with innovative solutions for the growing concern of water management in India. This Colloquium provided an interactive platform for academicians, researchers, policy makers and industry personnel to provide viable and sustainable solution to society.
