DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
[SANDWICH PATTERN]
(TOTAL INTAKE 60)
(START YEAR OF PROGRAM 1994)

Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich) students are privileged students who get exposure to the industrial environment during one year industrial in-plant training as an essential component of four year degree programme.

Sandwich course, a blend of mechanical engineering theory and actual practices in mechanical industries.

During industrial in-plant training, students learn various industry concepts like

  • Organizational structure of industry
  • Industrial design and drawing
  • Manufacturing processes and machine tools
  • Material handling methods and equipment’s
  • Processes and operation planning
  • Quality control systems
  • Measuring instruments

  • Supervised industrial in-plant training, in the Second Term of Third Year and First Term of Final Year, for six months each.
  • Industrial training in core mechanical industry.
  • During training, students work on need based industrial projects.
  • University examination (viva) based on a comprehensive training report and contribution of the student during training.
  • Self study theory subjects and seminar during both training terms.
  • Structured industrial training enhance students’ academic, career and personal development improving professional ability

Department of Mechanical Engineering
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (SANDWICH)
(Recognised by AICTE, New Delhi and affiliated to Savitribal Phule Pune University, Pane)
(STARTED IN THE YEAR 1994)

Department of Mechanical Engineering of AISSMS College of Engineering runs specialized course of Mechanical Engineering (Sandwich Pattern).Mechanical Engineering (SandwichPattern) course provides an opportunity to students to get exposure  to industrial environment and to interact with industry professionals during one year industrial in plant training as an essential component of four year Degree program. These students have to undergo industrial in plant training in the second term of third Year (Sixth Semester) and first term of final year (Seventh Semester) for six months each. Industrial in plant training in third year is an induction type of training with an objective to get exposure to industrial work-life and work-culture. After successful completion of the training, SW trainee will have to appear for University oral examination based on training completed and alsowill have to appear for two theory papers as a self-study subject as prescribed in University curriculum. University oral examination will be jointly conducted by an internal examiner (College guide) and an external examiner from industrial sector.

For the second phase of training, during the first term of final year, SW student will have to join preferably the same industry for project work where he has completed first six months training. It is, therefore most desirable that at the end of the first phase of training student should be ready in consultation with industry supervisors with some spadework for his likely final Year Project work. At the end of the second phase of training, SW trainee will be assessed by University Oral Examination and two theory papers prescribed. University Oral examination will be jointly conducted by an internal and an external examiner from industry.

During training, SW students are expected to learn about various industry concepts like organizational structure of company, industrial design and drawing, manufacturing processes, manufacturing machine tools, material handling methods and equipment, processes and operation planning and quality control systems and measuring instruments. Third year students have to solve minimum three assignments during training whereas final year students have to do Industrial project along with minimum three assignments.

One more important point to keep in mind is that one year sandwich in plant training is certainly at the cost of theory papers which are covered under regular BE Mechanical courses. It is, therefore, essential that the trainees need to put in additional efforts during the courses of their training to make up this loss. For Sandwich student, training is essential as per the University curriculum and satisfies the requirements of the Apprenticeship ACT 1973 also. Mechanical Engineering Department is always in communication with various large and medium scale manufacturing industries and forboth the phases of in plant training, department will take care of the placement of students for SW training.

This course is a blend of Mechanical Engineering theory and actual practices in Mechanical Industries. In plant training plays a very important role in the overall development of students.
