Introduction of Department: 

Production  Engineering (Sandwich Pattern) Course is accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) (AICTE)

The course leading to a bachelor’s degree in Production Engineering (Sandwich Pattern) was started in the year 1994. The Department presently has highly qualified and experienced staff on its roll. The activities of the Department are conducted, besides teaching, in the areas of research, consulting, training, alumni and placement.

Department is planning to start the Post Graduate Course with Industrial Engineering as a specialization from academic year 2017-18.

The Department has well equipped laboratories on the following subjects:

  • CAD/CAM Systems
  • Production Management

The Department also has a departmental library, computer center and seminar hall.

  • V Y Sonawane, HOD, Production Engineering initiated and presented the departmental facilities and activities in detail.
  • S H Wankhade introduced DAB committee members in brief
  • Principal, Dr. D S Bormane felicitated and welcomed DAB committee members.
  • This was followed with introduction of faculty
  • S H Wankhade discussed program outcomes and PSOs of the department.

Suggestions from Academician (Prof. Dr. B B Ahuja, Director, COEP, Pune)

  • Dr Ahuja initiated discussion by questioning what’s quality technical education. He asked further how we align vision and mission of Institute with department. He further suggested that faculties should work on that to benchmark vision and mission
  • It was discussed that after every 3 years industries are getting leaner and leaner. Students along with faculties should learn from industry. Improve interaction of faculty with industry. Faculty should go for training to industry for 6-8 weeks every 3 years.
  • Advised to improve curriculum with inclusion of technology and management oriented courses for Techno-managers. Right curriculum contributes to development.
  • Teaching fundamentals is necessary. Learning curve with the students should be maintained constant. Students learn on their own. Skill based courses, mass customization, including AI in syllabus of BE is necessary. MOOC based courses to be included.
  • Updating of vision and mission with institute and department after accomplishment.
  • Vision must include research orientation, globally competitive.
  • Develop curriculum with participation of similar other programs. (Like D Y Patil, Akurdi)
  • Include rich courses like entrepreneurship, design and development, employability and employment. Measures to be developed for evaluation of rubrics design
  • For short term goals, it’s necessary to provide deadlines for each goal. Provide with numeric values and quantify the goals.
  • Expert lectures should be organized from alumni and entrepreneurs. Producing entrepreneurs is a challenge. Center of excellence for a specific program can be developed which is based around some PG course.
  • Professional society tie-ups are required with department. The activity which is to be conducted is to be elaborated.

 

Suggestions from Industry Expert (Mr. Sunil Bhatambrekar, Head, Product Engineering, Kalyani Maxion Wheels Pvt. Ltd.)

  • It was further suggested by committee to have industry involvement in framing of vision and mission. It was also suggested that we should focus on development in current technologies like VSM and Lean Six Sigma and involve entrepreneurship development programs. It was advised that we should include innovation and lifelong learning.
  • Goals of the department were suggested to be quantifiable and SMART.
  • Intellectual property awareness should be increased. Improve communication; develop faculties, syllabus as benchmark to attract foreign students.
  • S H Wankhade justified statements made by committee members with current and prospective plans with institute.
  • Instead of traditional Industry Institute Interaction, it can be modified to industry orientation with academics.
  • Inculcating knowledge in staff as well.
  • Innovative projects should be made and participated by students and faculties.
  • Can we include in goals NDRF achievements.
  • Include year of program in slides with achievements and other similar details.
  • In vision or goals include that we train industry.
  • Labs, PG course, Lean Manufacturing, etc. should be included

  2. Make Theory Lectures Interactive:
    We have to write down too many tedious assignments to complete our term work, which consumes a lot of time for writing & everybody blindly copies them from past notes or friends. We can replace assignments with presentations prepared by Group of 4-5 students & presented to the class. After the lecture, Professor will provide clarity & rectify any errors in the presentation. As We have only 60+30 students in production batch of Pune university, we have no single book available for our studies. We have to highly rely upon notes, Xerox & multiple books during our exam, hence increasing the efforts to study in short time. This method will help students prepare their own notes & self study, in their own language & hence create a central database for study during exams. Only writing down notes don’t help students learn, rather we can use images, videos to gain practical learning, as we remember 70% of what we see, rather than 25% of what we blindly write. Every group should consist of students having various roles eg. One should have laptop, one should be good in integrating notes from various sources, one should be good in preparing notes, one should be good in presentation. This will help students learn teamwork & learn to distribute their roles amongst themselves. Without the foundation pillar , a building cannot stand long & tall, similarly without the foundation of basics of the subject, a student cannot advance in to research papers, pr rather they won’t be of much help until & unless a student knows hi/hers basics. Study of research papers is advance stage after the students learn about their basics.
  3. Cross Learning –Knowledge sharing: Add Knowledge Sharing into the syllabus:
    We as sandwich students are lucky to have exposure to corporate life, manufacturing practices, processes. Unfortunately, this is not used to the advantage of other students. A student going in to inplant training learns only processes about the department to which he was allotted for. He doesn’t learn other processes which are experienced by other students. So for this reason, every student should made to prepare a presentation about process or equipment that they witnessed & what they have learnt about their basics in their inplant training. These presentations, should not be of theoretical manner as mentioned in above point, but should include real examples from their inplant training, which is not part of their project. Any random process data & information is available on the internet these days & students are smart enough to use them. 60 students to give a presentation each for their learning’s, as a subject which is spread over a semester so that they are not judged within a 5 minute viva or oral. This should be judged by a panel of professors who are experienced in industry process & new technologies. This will help students learn the nitty-gritty’s of the process, which will help them adapt to the industry fast when they enter industry.

 

  1. Skills Development:
    students come from various backgrounds into the department, but very few of them posses leadership & proactive qualities, which are cherished in the corporate life. Due to this, other who don’t take active roles in department activities usually lack experience & they have low confidence, when they enter corporate life & then they start to fall behind colleagues who are proactive. Hence we need to add interactions of the students with the professors, so that they can improve their qualities & confidence. If a student is exposed to various activities, he gets various experiences & start becoming a dynamic person with his experiences. The department should encourage new activities & compulsory involve different students to different activities, so that everyone gets a chance rather than group of 5-10 students taking part in every event. Ultimately, students who are dynamic will grow faster in their field. So we can increase self learning of students by providing them exposure to Soft as well Hard Skills Development. Presentations can improve stage confidence, communication skills, language expertise. Etc.

 

  1. Add Product Lifecycle Subject to Syllabus:

A product lifecycle is the process a product goes through in a manufacturing process of sector. Any field we enter, it has process from raw material to usage in the market. But there are lot of stages through which a product passes & hence it is not taught to students in syllabus.
a. QFD: Market Research: A product is researched from market whether it will be saleable to customers?
b. Design: Material Selection on cost, strengths etc; Process Selection on application, feasibility, cost.
c. Development: Alternative technologies/ materials, Inhouse- Outhouse manufacturing decision, costing of development etc.
d. Purchase or procuring: Selection of vendors, location of vendors, assessment of vendors, costing of procurements
e. Production: Efficiency , time management of processes, time study, assembly practices
f. Quality: Quality practices, quality Tools, Quality software’s
g. Marketing: Marketing practices, marketing phases, marketing trends
h. Service & Maintenance: Main stage of a product life, when after product is introduced to market, what are service & maintenance practices being used in the market, how product is serviced in the market, how & what is maintenance practices etc.

  1. Add Automobiles Subject into the syllabus:

As Pune is an automobile hub, we need to include Automobile subject into the syllabus, as this will helps students get exposure to automobiles & help them get placed in the Pune Industries.

  1. Benchmark Premier institutes Exam process:

There should be continuous assessment cycle of students of students learning. I am DME from Cusrow Wadia & the exam pattern followed was 75 TH + 25 Tests for 100 marks in a subject. 25 marks were considered from average marks of 2 tests from 3 tests for a subject in a semester. Out of 3 test, best of 2 test considered & then marks of two tests average were considered in the Final Addition to subject 100 marks. Continuous assessment ensures students be in touch with the subjects & get to know which topics early, rather than studying at the last moment in the final exam.

I, am extremely grateful to be present at the DAC – Department Advisory Committee Meeting which was held on 7th of March 2018 as a Student Representative from Production Department. The meeting was headed by Mr. Ahuja – Director of College of Engineering Pune, Mr Bhatambrekar – Head of Maxion wheels Ltd, Mr Padmaraj Doshi – MD Oriental Fabrications and a Parent of perusing BE student, The Principal Dr. D S Bormane and all the faculty members of Production Department. Various new concepts regarding designing the portion of BE and new ideas regarding the upliftment of students were discussed. A few valuable inputs were given by the advisories.

I as a Student Representative, felt that the meeting was a very good platform for the interaction of faculty members with Industry Experts which will help in improving the quality of education and bridge the gap between theory and practical.

I feel blessed to study in such a prestigious institute in the Production Department. The Department is very supportive in providing companies for the internships and have the right contacts and relationships with multinational companies like SKF, JCB, Thermax, Forbes Marshall, L&T, Goodrej etc. The department also arranges Industry Institute Interactive sessions where students from the department visit various industries and give information regarding latest trends and developments in the field to the operators and people who work in the company. The extra curriculum activities an  events  held in the college boast the confidence and provide a good platform for the students to showcase their talents and strengthen their management skills. The best part of the department is the sandwich pattern, in which students are required to do internship of one year. This gives a special edge to the students who get experience of working in a company while perusing their course.

‎Overall it was a great experience and I am thankful to our HOD, Prof Sonawane for giving me this opportunity to witness the DAC meeting and put forward the points from a student point of view. At the end I’ll like to Thank our  Principal Dr. D S Bormane for giving his valuable time and support as always.

Working under the principle of simplifying technology, redefining value, Pneu-Hydro Automations is an industry engaging in manufacturing and supply of material handling systems, special purpose machines and hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

We, the students of Production Department, AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune, were fortunate to be given the opportunity to visit this industry and impart the knowledge that has been given to us through our curriculum to the workers and operators.

The purpose of this event was not only to encourage the use of safety and quality control tools in the small scale industries, but also to learn from the workers about their work culture and methodologies.

In this event, we covered four major quality control tools: Six Sigma, 5S, 7 Wastes (Lean Manufacturing) and Kaizen.

A Research project of Prof. S.H.Wankhade, titled “Optimization of Hybrid machining process of rotary electro discharge machining with abrasive media” sanctioning a grant of Rs.1 Lakhs 90 thousand  by   BCUD, Savitribai phule Pune University.

  • Mr S H Wankhade organized a one day national level session on “FACE to Face Interactive session with Dr Sergei Ikovenko”. Sergie Ikovenko is a Professor at MIT, USA, TRIZ Level 5 Master and President of the International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) on August 13, 2016, attended by 22 Industrial professionals at AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune.
  • Mr S H Wankhade organized the “Inauguration of AISSMS TRIZ Level – 1 Certification Training Programme” through Dr Sergie Ikovenko, a Professor at MIT, USA, TRIZ Level 5 Master and President of the International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) on August 13, 2016 at AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune.
  • Mr S H Wankhade coordinated a one day session on “Interactive session on ‘Culture for Innovation’ By Dr. Hans-Juergen Lesser (CEO Centre of Expertise, ARaymond) and Mr Manish Padhariya (MD, ARaymond, Pune)”, on August 24, 2016 at AISSMS College of Engineering, Pune.
  • Mr S H Wankhade received a grant Rs 1.0 Lakh for organizing a 2 day State level seminar on ‘Zero Defect – Quality Improvement in Industries’ from Board of College and University Development, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune and was conducted on March 03-04, 2016 at AISSMSCOE, Pune.

  • Mr S H Wankhade delivered a session on ‘Systematic Innovation’ for Faculty and ‘Systematic Innovation and TRIZ: Theory of Inventive Problem Solving’ for Final Year Students of Aeronautical Engineering during on April 20-21, 2016 at Priyadarshini College of Engineering, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  • Mr S H Wankhade started AISSMSCOE TRIZ Chapter at the college level in collaboration with TRIZ Association of Asia and International Association of TRIZ (MATRIZ), Russia. Under this chapter a TRIZ Level – 1 certification training Programme is planned. Under this lectures are being conducted on “Awareness of TRIZ” for all Third and Final Year Students of AISSMSCOE.

 The very intention of organising the Seminar on ‘Mechatronics – An Industrial Application Approach’ is to bring together the well read academicians and well experienced Professionals through the grant of Rs 100000/- under Quality Improvement Program of Savitribai Phule Pune University and support of Management of All India Shri Shivaji Memorial Society’s College of Engineering, Pune. The chief Guest of the Inauguration program was Mr. Vidyadhar Tilak, Chairman, iETP Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, Pune. Mr. Suresh Pratap Shinde, Hon Joint Secretary, AISSM Society along with Dr D. S. Bormane, Principal, AISSMSCOE also graced the occasion. 63 participants from various Colleges and Industries attended the seminar during 3rd and 4th Mar 2017. Various sessions were conducted by Entrepreneurs, Industry Professionals and Academicians viz. Mr. Vidyadhar Tilak, Mr. Sachin Joshi (Founder, EkamEco Solutions, Mumbai), Mr. Gauresh Khanolkar (Chizel 3D Printing Solutions), Mr. Nilesh Bagul (Director, MIS Solutions), Mr. Basavaraj Hooli (Sr. Advisor, CDAC), Mr. Ajay Pradhan (Ex-Div Manager, Tata Motors), Mr. Zubair Shaikh (Forbes Marshall Ltd.), Mr. Nitin Gawhane (GM, Thyssenkrupp Industries India), Dr Shantipal Ohol (Asso. Prof., Mechanical Engg., COEP, Pune), Mr. Manish Padharia (MD, ARaymond Fasteners India Pvt. Ltd.) Mr. Rajan Shringarpure (Ex-MD, Vishay components India Pvt. Ltd.). These experts deliberated various topics related to Industrial Applications of Mechatronics, MEMS, Robots, Internet of Things, PLC, Automobiles etc. Special efforts were taken by HOD Mr. V. Y. Sonawane, Chief Co-ordinator Mr. S. H. Wankhade, Co-coordinator Ms. Y. K. Funde and all Faculty and Staff members of Production Engineering Department. Shri Shahu Chhatrapati Maharaj, President, AISSM Society and other honorable Trustees appreciated this conglomeration of Industry and Institute for knowledge sharing.

  • Mr S S Kallurkar, Published and presented a paper entitled “Development Of A Model For Recognition Of Ergonomic Considerations Required For Structuring Of CAD Packages To Improve Usability And User Productivity” at National Conference on Technological Advancements and Automatization in Engineering on 28-29 Jan 2016. The paper is awarded a special consolation prize with a medal and certificate.   • There is also production Engineering Students Association (PESA). The students related activities such as social programs, industrial visits, are carried out
  • As department is running sandwich pattern, in Third Year and Final Year, students are undergoing training in various companies like Thermax Ltd., TATA Motors, Hinoday, Godrej, Forbes Marshal, Kirloskar Oil Engines, TATA Auto Component, PARI etc. Therefore there is good interaction of staff guiding these students with various experts in such companies.

 A National Level Students Symposium ‘AISSMS Engineering Today-16’ was organized on 13th, 14th & 15th September 2016, under title PRODFEST-16. Students presented papers on Robotics in Manufacturing, Micro-electro-mechanical Systems and Case studies in Production Management and hosting events like Technical paper presentation, Marketing Mania, Technical Quiz, Autoledge, CAD WAR etc. Students from colleges across the country are participated.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Course of three day was organized by Production Engineering Students IE Chapter from 21st to 23rd August 2014.The student from BE Production Sandwich & BE Mechanical have participated. The knowledge of Six Sigma is important for Production Engineer, as it provides a common language and toolset that ensures the development and maintenance of the organization’s design, control and improvement in processes. With Six Sigma and lean Lean Six Sigma organization’s can increased revenue through improved customer satisfaction, waste elimination, reduced cost and decreased cycle times. The course was conducted in collaboration with Production Engineering Department, AISSMS COE and Asian Institute of Quality Management.

Department participated in the Engineering Today – 2014 national event of college, as ProdFest -2014. Under this four events were organized namely Technical Paper Presentation, Marketing Mania, Technical Quiz and Autoledge. Total numbers of participant in the events were 100. Students had the good exposure to show their talent and had the interaction with the students of different colleges.

About the EventAutomobile forms an indivisible part of our day to day life making our life much simpler with very complex mechanisms. An automobile is made up of several different parts some known and some unknown. Automobile as a system is an integration of various different systems working dependently or independently.
Defining Autoledge, it is a combination of ‘Auto’ from the automobile and ‘ledge’ from the knowledge. The event is about knowing your own vehicle to the core along with the functioning of various systems and thus the concepts, with the general knowledge of an automotive industry.
